Stop Hoarding Tabs.
Start Closing Them.

TabWatch shows exactly how long every browser tab has been open — so you can spot the stale ones, search, sort, and close them without ever leaving the popup.

Everything you need to
tame tab overload

TabWatch gives you full visibility and control over every open tab — no account, no sync, no nonsense.

Track Tab Age

Precise timestamps for every open tab, persisted across browser sessions and restarts. Never lose track of when you opened something again.

Instant Search

Filter hundreds of tabs by title or URL in real time. Find the tab you opened three days ago without scrolling through everything.

Sort & Navigate

Sort by duration or title with a single click. Jump directly to any tab — TabWatch focuses the right window automatically.

Age Warnings

Color-coded staleness alerts escalate from blue to yellow, orange, and red based on how long a tab has been sitting idle — configurable to your workflow.

Visit History

See how many times you've activated each tab since it opened. Useful for understanding which tabs you actually use versus which ones you just keep "just in case."

Keyboard Driven

Arrow keys to navigate, Enter to jump, Escape to close, and number keys 1–5 to instantly switch to a specific tab. Zero mouse required.

Up and running in seconds

TabWatch works silently in the background — no setup, no configuration required to get started.

1

Install

One-click install from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons. No account needed. Permissions are minimal and clearly explained.

2

Browse Normally

TabWatch silently records when each tab was opened. It runs as a lightweight service worker — no impact on browser performance.

3

Review & Close

Click the toolbar icon to see every open tab ranked by age. Search, sort, jump, or close — all without leaving the popup.

Your data never leaves your browser

TabWatch is built on a simple principle: the extension should help you, not collect from you.

  • All tab data is stored locally using the browser's built-in storage API
  • No external servers, no analytics, no network requests made by the extension
  • No accounts, sign-ups, or personal information required
  • Permissions are minimal: tabs, storage, and windows — nothing more
  • Fully transparent — built with your privacy as the top priority

Common questions

Does TabWatch slow down my browser?
No. TabWatch runs as a Manifest V3 service worker, which means it only activates in response to tab events (open, close, navigate, activate). It is dormant the rest of the time and has no measurable impact on browser performance or memory.
Does it track my browsing history or what I read?
TabWatch only records the URL and the timestamp of when each tab was first opened at that URL. It does not read page content, scroll position, or any other activity. All data stays in your local browser storage and is never transmitted anywhere.
Will it remember tab durations after I restart my browser?
Yes. Timestamps are persisted in chrome.storage.local, so durations survive browser restarts and system reboots. When the browser restarts, TabWatch resumes tracking from where it left off.
What happens to the data when I close a tab?
The tab's open-time entry is removed from storage when the tab closes or navigates to a new URL. Visit history (how many times you activated a given URL) is kept separately and persists for 90 days after last seen, then is automatically cleaned up.
Does it work if I have hundreds of tabs open?
Yes. TabWatch is designed for heavy tab users. The popup includes real-time search and sort so you can quickly find what you're looking for even with hundreds of tabs open. The extension automatically cleans up stale storage entries to stay lightweight.
Is TabWatch free?
Yes, TabWatch is completely free. There is no premium tier, no subscription, and no in-app purchases. It is open source under the MIT license.
Does it work on Firefox as well as Chrome?
Yes. TabWatch is available on both the Chrome Web Store (for Chrome, Brave, Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers) and Firefox Add-ons. Both versions share the same codebase and feature set.
